Before becoming a faculty member at his current university, Dr. Moskowitz held the position of associate professor in the department of global business leadership at Saint John’s University from 2011 to 2017. Dr. Moskowitz first joined the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in 2005 as an assistant professor in the department of management and global business, a position he held until 2011. His tenure-track appointment marked a significant transition from industry consulting to full-time academia, allowing him to apply his expertise in economics, technology, and management to undergraduate education. Dr. Moskowitz’s first academic appointment began in 2002 as an assistant professor in the college of commerce and finance at Villanova University. There, he contributed to management education while maintaining active roles as a consultant for global multinational corporations, small and medium-sized technology firms, and state and federal government agencies in New York and Washington, D.C.
Before entering academia full-time, Dr. Moskowitz built an accomplished career as a consultant in economics and technology for think tanks and government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The events following September 11th prompted him to pursue teaching as a primary vocation.
Dr. Moskowitz’s educational background is foundational to his professional achievements. His undergraduate studies culminated with a Bachelor of Science in physics with a minor in mathematics, magna cum laude, from City College of New York in 1974, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Moskowitz also completed a Master of Philosophy and a Master of Arts in history at Columbia University in 1982 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economic history and history of technology from Columbia University in 1999.
In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. Moskowitz is an associate fellow with the Academy of World Business, Marketing and Management Development. He has also provided expert witness testimony in court cases involving high-tech firms and continues to be recognized as a leading technology industry consultant.
Throughout his career, Dr. Moskowitz has authored several influential works, such as “The Advanced Materials Revolution: Technology and Economic Growth in the Age of Globalization” in 2009, “Advanced Materials Innovation: Managing Global Technology in the 21st Century” in 2016, “Cybercrime and Business: Strategies for Global Corporate Security” in 2017, and his most recent book, “Managing Technology from Laboratory to Marketplace: Cheating the Valley of Death,” in 2024, which explores the challenges of bringing technological innovations to market. His first book remains a highlight, cited prominently by policymakers, including its selection as the first reference in a White House report, and has influenced doctoral research across disciplines, such as computer science, architecture and anthropology.
Dr. Moskowitz’s research has been widely cited by prominent organizations such as Wired magazine and The Economist, and by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and was featured as the first citation in a White House white paper on the Materials Genome Initiative. Additionally, his biographical profiles have appeared in Time magazine, Business Insider, and several international business journals focused on technology and entrepreneurship.
Eager for the future, Dr. Moskowitz’s ongoing projects include proposals for books on visionary leadership in high-tech industries, regional high-tech clusters, global nanotechnology, national competitiveness and the societal impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on economies worldwide. Dr. Moskowitz’s early exposure to science was shaped by his father’s pioneering work in electrical engineering at Rome Air Development Center (now Rome Laboratory) in Rome, New York. SAINT JOSEPH, MN, April 22, 2024 — Sanford L. Moskowitz, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. Moskowitz has distinguished himself as a full professor at Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict in Collegeville, Minnesota since 2017. In his teaching, he has specialized in international business and global innovation. He has been instrumental in creating and teaching his course on the history of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity and in the impact they are having on 21st century society. Dr. Moskowitz was an assistant professor at Saint John’s University and the College of St. Benedict from 2005 to 2011 and an associate professor there from 2011 to 2017. During his tenure at the school, he served as chair of the department of global business leadership for seven years. During his time as chair, the department of global business leadership developed one of the most diverse faculty in the school.
In addition to his teachings, Dr. Moskowitz has consulted on the innovation process for both established corporations and high-tech startups within the US and globally. Clients have relied on Dr. Moskowitz for his expertise on the innovation process, economic forecasting, and governmental policy. In this capacity, he has served as an expert witness for high-profile law firms on legal cases involving the development and marketing of technologies in the biotech, pharmaceutical and energy industries.
The foundation of Dr. Moskowitz’s professional success can be traced back to his family’s achievements and then to his own academic experiences. Dr. Moskowitz, greatly influenced by his father –Dr. Fred Moskowitz, an internationally recognized electrical engineer and author of a foundational theory of network reliability analysis, The Moskowitz Factoring Theorem – pursued his Bachelor of Science (with a minor in English) from the City College of New York (CCNY). While accepted to graduate programs in physics at the University of Chicago and UC Berkeley, Dr. Moskowitz opted instead to earn his master’s degree in philosophy and history and a Doctor of Philosophy in economic history and the history of technology from Columbia University. His academic journey reflects a profound versatility, having been accepted into top graduate programs in very different disciplines and embracing a specialty that combines both the liberal arts and technology studies.
Dr. Moskowitz has written extensively in the area of innovation, global R&D and the advanced materials sector. Following up on his earlier books –The Advanced Materials Revolution: Technology and Economic Growth in the Age of Globalization (Wiley: 2009) and Advanced Materials Innovation: Managing Global Technology in the 21st Century (Wiley: 2016) – his latest publication is his 2024 book Managing Technology from Laboratory to Marketplace: Cheating the Valley of Death (Springer Nature), which is part of Springer Nature’s Management for Professionals series. This latest book is a comprehensive reflection of Dr. Moskowitz’s extensive experience and expertise in technology commercialization. Dr. Moskowitz’s research has been cited by such places as The Economist; Wired, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; The American Institute of Physics; The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; The Institute for Defense Analysis; The EU’s European Commission; and The Routledge Companion to Contemporary Architectural History.
